The American Basketball Association (ABA)
Established in 1967, the ABA was the new and exciting professional basketball league with the trademark red, white and blue basketball. Differing from the NBA with its fast paced game and enormously colorful characters, this league brought you the three-point shot and the slam dunk contest. In addition, the ABA gave you first such great players as Rick Barry, Julius ‘Dr. J’ Erving, Moses Malone, Artis Gilmore, Larry Brown and George Gervin.
In 1976 the ABA finally gained the merger with the NBA that it had long sought. Four teams that you know and admire — the New Jersey Nets, the Indiana Pacers, the Denver Nuggets, the San Antonio Spurs — were originally ABA teams that entered the NBA. “Loose Balls”, by Terry Pluto, is a fascinating and entertaining book to read for more information about the original ABA.
The ABA spirit was revived in the year 2000 with six teams taking to the court around the nation for a new era of play. Since that time, the league has grown each year until now approximately ninety teams will lace up for play each season. ABA teams are unique from any other league because of the local ownership and expansive community involvement. With this number of teams, the American Basketball Association is the largest professional basketball league in the world.
ABA basketball is high energy, non-stop, family oriented entertainment.
